Finding employment in forestry disciplines takes diligence and dedication. A significant amount of the USA forests are in public lands, particularly in the western states. Consequently many employment openings are with state and federal natural resource agencies. There is seasonal work in wildland fire, and fulltime opportunities in resource agencies, private lands management, urban and utility forestry. Private companies need foresters, too.

Good training is importnat, too. California has a number of Fire Science Degree Programs. Nearly ten percent of all firefighters in the country work in California. If you want to fight fire in California, get trained in California.

Forestry (as well as wildland fire fighting) can also be tremendous occupational choices for military veterans. Forestry, particularly field forestry, is a good fit for active individuals who can work independently without supervision. Our national forests, parks and state lands need good people who care about the land as a national trust for future generations. California is one state wooing Veterans for thoer forestry and fire protection occupations.

Many of the state forestry web sites have substantial information on landowner programs, stewardship, specific state forestry issues, geographic data and much more. These webs are not only good resources for job seekers, but good information repositories for later use on the job. Take advantage of all the free information!

Forestry provides a significant amount of work at both the 'blue collar' and professional levels. The most time spent outdoors is usually in the technician level which generally does not require a four year college degree. Jobs involving trail work construction, tree planting, forest management, logging, stream and wildlife surveys are often done by people with basic practical skills.

Forest management planning, accomplishing regulatory requirements for watershed projects, professional forestry require four years or more of college. Both the federal government and every state needs professional foresters. However, entry level positions are often quite scarce, even with a good degree. Consequently developing a network of contacts and involving yourself in volunteer forestry field projects can provide you with leads to fulltime work within forestry. It's a small professional world so contacts count.

These links should all be up-to-date but state agency webs seem to move urls a lot. If you can't find a particular link, check the main site for that particular state using any search engine.

STATE FORESTRY

Each state has a state forestry department, or department of natural resources, or a similarly named agency. Most of these agencies will be posting available jobs through their state jobs web sites. But, many post job openings through their social media pages, too. There will be differences in what each state considers important in forestry activities. It's your responsibility to review important issues before you apply for a position.
