The best place to start looking for a job is in the local newspaper. Many environmental and conservation jobs are still advertised locally if the employer is looking for a person who is familiar with the local geographic area and knowledgeable about regional issues.
In recent years, both the public and private sector employers have been utilizing the classified ads to hire people closer to home. This can be a plus if you can find the right newspaper. You might have much less competition for a particular position if it's not widely advertised. Be sure to identify specific community newspapers where your future employer might be advertising. Not only will you get a chance at local jobs, but you can inform yourself on local conditions at the same time.
Once you find the newspaper classifieds for your ideal geographic area, be sure to check the news regularly. Jobs in classified ads are very, very time sensitive, because print advertising is very, very expensive. Be prepared to pounce quickly.
